Hyperacusis: An Introduction for Mental Health Practitioners

Authors

Abstract

Research on hyperacusis remains limited, which leaves mental health professionals with little guidance on how to conceptualize this condition, create a treatment plan, and accommodate clients. Although we know that individuals with hyperacusis present with higher rates of co-occurring mental health issues, the existing literature lacks practical strategies and frameworks for practice. This paper aims to bridge this gap by providing mental health professionals with an overview of the existing hyperacusis literature (including the etiology, symptomology, and current treatment approaches) and by proposing practical applications and recommendations for clinical practice.
