Emotional Expression and the Construction of Heterosexuality: Hugo Bettauer’s Viennese Advice Columns

Abstract

How can the history of emotions complement and complicate the history of sexuality?  This article interrogates an advice column from 1920s Vienna in search of new forms of expression, including desire, lonliness, and confusion, as well as new norms, such as the companionate marriage.
